ABC just wrapped up what could be the best season so far from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, setting the show up for Season 5 next year.
And though the show will undoubtedly push forward into new territory, some fans are wondering the agents will return to the artificial reality established through technology and magic in which Hydra rules in place of SHIELD.

The Framework featured heavily in the final pod of episodes in Season 4, thrusting the protagonists into a topsy-turvy world in which they must before a maniacal Life Model Decoy kills them all and turns her nightmarish domain into a reality. But now that the storyline has ended, the showrunners have indicated that that was the last we’ll see of the parallel reality.
But while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Jed Whedon might have provided some hope in the form of a spinoff from the main show.
“The Framework opened up a lot of ideas and a lot of possibilities,” Whedon said, “and our head of post keeps reminding us of that, because he’s the biggest fan of the Framework, and he thinks it should be its own spinoff show.”

Wow, a spinoff? Is that even possible?
Let’s keep in mind that Agent Carter lasted for two seasons before getting axed, and a pilot for the Bobbi Morse-and-Lance Hunter pilot Marvel’s Most Wanted wasn’t picked up after heavy discussions at ABC. So how likely would a spinoff based on a parallel reality concept actually be?
If there’s anything we’ve learned when talking about SHIELD, it’s never say never. The show has recently brought Ghost Rider into the fold and even became a stealth adaptation of some Secret Warriors storylines. If the creators think there’s some story potential to tap for the series, we don’t doubt that they’ll make it happen.

The regular cast features Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie, and John Hannah as Holden Radcliffe.
The fifth season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will debut this coming Winter, consist of 22 episodes, and is shifting from Tuesday to Friday nights and airing at 9 p.m — taking over The Inhumans timeslot.
