Fans of X-Men should expect to see plenty of nods to the comic book source material as the new Fox television series The Gifted continues.

The first episode of the series, "eXposed," featured a few Easter eggs, including a nod to X-Men: The Animated Series and a Stan Lee cameo.

However, according to star Coby Bell, that Stan Lee cameo only happened because the stars happened to align over Dallas.

"The Stan Lee thing was just luck," Bell tells ComicBook.com. "He happened to be in Dallas. [Executive Producer Matt Nix and Producer Derek Hoffman] went to where he was and were like, 'Hey man, we're doing an X-Men TV show. Will you come and pop in? It happened in like a day...And he was like, 'Sure!' and he just came by and did it."

Bell says that Nix and Hoffman provide the series with the comic book fan's point of view, and they're planting seeds that even other fans won't know are there until much later on.

"They're doing a lot of cool stuff that I think the audience won't even realize until season two or season three if we can get that far that they're planting right now," Bell says.

As far as Easter eggs like the X-Men ringtone, Bell says the producers are all about pleasing the fans.

"They're deep into that," he says. "They really want to give the fans what they want, and they respect where the fans are coming from and how loyal the fans are, so they don't want to let them down. We're working really hard not to let them down."

We know that Nix and Hoffman worked to make sure that the X-Men: The Animated Series nod made it into the pilot. That's a good sign for more Easter eggs and references to come.

The Gifted airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
