Once Marvel Studios announced that Thanos would go on to be a major villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans knew that the mythology around the Infinity Stones would become an important narrative. These powerful objects will eventually come together to charge the Infinity Gauntlet, with the new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War possibly confirming Thanos’ plan has reached the halfway point of completion.

This a very clever shot. It’s like OH NO, THANOS HAS TWO STONES, but you don’t notice that the thumb is bent back, meaning he might also have the time stone. pic.twitter.com/Ddju7cm7h9

Most of Thanos‘ appearances in the Infinity War trailer distinctly show that he has obtained at least two stones, the blue Space Stone and the purple Power Stone. Based on clever editing of Thanos, some fans think he may have also come to possess the green Time Stone.
Marvel’s The Infinity Gauntlet was a six-issue storyline from 1991 that featured Thanos seeking out these six powerful gems, forcing the most unlikely of Marvel’s roster to come together to defeat him. Fans might not have known what they were looking at with its first appearance, but these Stones first began appearing in Captain America: The First Avenger.
The Space Stone was buried within the Tesseract, an object that Red Skull used to power his futuristic weapons. In the next film, Marvel’s The Avengers, the Mind Stone appeared in Loki’s scepter, granting him the ability to control the minds of others.
The Reality Stone appeared in Thor: The Dark World in the form of “Aether,” while the Power Stone debuted in Guardians of the Galaxy. Doctor Strange debuted the Time Stone, which was contained within the Eye of Agamotto.
And look at the very conveniently placed trailer lens flare that is both green and blocking how many stones he has. pic.twitter.com/CBZm4w6cQH

The Power Stone was last in the hands of the Nova Corps, and, considering Ronan the Accuser almost defeated them, it’s safe to assume Thanos made quick work of them to obtain it. The Space Stone was last seen in Odin’s treasure room, but given Loki’s deceptive nature and almost complete destruction of Asgard, Thanos wouldn’t have had a hard time procuring it.
Avengers 4 would surely be a disappointment if Thanos hadn’t obtained all the Infinity Stones, so we know it’s only a matter of time before he finds all of them, but whether or not he makes his presence known before or after getting the Time Stone from Doctor Strange is yet to be seen.
Thanos will wreak havoc on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
