The release of Avengers: Infinity War is still a few months away, but that hasn’t stopped two of the film’s stars from fueling a pretty big fan theory.

Instagram user mkgschultre recently shared a photo of her Captain America shield, which she got signed by Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan while at ACE Comic Con Phoenix. Underneath his signature, Evans put both “Cap” and Nomad”, while Stan wrote “I’m with Nomad” with an arrow pointing to Evans’ signature.
As fans will remember, Steve Rogers/Captain America took on the moniker of Nomad in 1974’s Captain America #180, after becoming disillusioned by the government he was previously representing. With that came a new costume (something that Evans is wearing in Infinity War), and a general attempt to distance Steve from the Captain America title.
People have been speculating about Nomad’s role in Infinity War for quite some time, especially after the end of Captain America: Civil War seemed to set that up nicely. This certainly hasn’t been helped by Stan, who added a Nomad-themed doodle to a fan’s poster back in November.
“A fan said to me that you can add anything you want on Chris’ face, and I was like, ‘It’s either a thought bubble or it’s that, so,” Stan said about the drawing last month. “You can expect whatever you want. First of all, I wasn’t even the first person to say that. Somebody else had gone out and said, ‘He’s Nomad,’ or something. He is missing the star on his chest, so I don’t know what that means. The way it’s been going I would be on set and go, ‘So you are missing the star on the chest, does that mean that you’re [Nomad]?’ I would probably discover it in the moment.”
Ultimately, fans will just have to wait and see what comes of the Nomad theory. But either way, Evans is excited about the new look that he will be donning in Infinity War.
“I think it’s cool!” Evans recently said, in response to the “Cap beard”. “I think it kind of changes things up. We’ve seen Cap the same way so many times. He’s such a throwback, he’s such a classic. It kind of gives him a little bit of a modern vibe.”
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4th.
