MySpace Replaced By Twitter In Marvel Retcon

In one of the oddest examples of the "rolling timeline" of the Marvel Universe necessitating a change to a flashback scene, one infamous element of Civil War: Front Line has been retconned and updated for the modern social media age.

Never heard of a "retcon?" It's short for "retroactive continuity," and it's basically what happens when comic books and other serialized media make a continuity change down the road that retroactively affects the stories told between when the change happened in the timeline, and the stories currently being told.

In this case, Marvel has replaced the once-popular social media platform MySpace with Twitter in a flashback to a piece of dialogue that took place during the Civil War mega-event.

Challenging Captain America as being out of touch with the common man, journalist Sally Floyd asked him when the last time was that he had gone to a NASCAR race, and whether he even knew what MySpace was.

That was 10 years ago, though, and MySpace was more of a thing at the time. Now it's Twitter where all the kids go to do their...social media stuff...and in Captain America: Steve Rogers last week, Marvel updated a flashback to reflect as much.

(After all, what's the point of asking if somebody is out of touch, when the comment itself would make you appear desperately out of touch?)

The scene was, even at the time, controversial, in part because a lot of elements of Civil War itself, including the nature of Captain America's surrender to the authorities, were controversial. It spawned hundreds of memes and lots of snark in the comics community...and now it's back, and better than ever!

CBR had the official preview of Captain America, and Bleeding Cool spotted the discrepancy.
