Beatriz became involved in a Twitter conversation about the excitement over the positive reviews for the upcoming Wonder Woman movie and what that could mean for more female-led superhero movies and television in the near future. When asked what she’d like to see next, Beatriz had an easy answer.
“I’d like to see America Chavez played by me and written by @QuirkyRican [Gabby Rivera],” Beatriz tweeted.
Neither Marvel Studios nor Marvel Television has made any indication that they plans to use America Chavez or any of the Young Avengers characters at present. However, Beatriz may find that she still has to fight for the role as the star of Jane the Virgin has also expressed an interest.
Beatriz is an Argentine-born actress who is best known for playing Detective Rosa Diaz on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She’s also guest-starred on three episode of Modern Family, been a guest voice on Bob’s Burgers and Axe Cop.
Rivera is currently writing America for Marvel Comics, which is America Chavez’s first ongoing solo series.
America Chavez was created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta in Vengeance #1 in 2011. She uses the superhero persona of Miss America, which was a Golden Age character for Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel.
America Chavez is a Latin-American, LGBTQ teenager from a dimension separated from the timestream called the Utopian Parallel. She gained a significant fanbase almost immediately and reached an even larger audience when she was added to the cast of Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s Young Avengers in 2013. She joined A-Force by G. Willow Wilson, Marguerite Bennett and Jorge Molina during the Secret Wars event. When the Marvel Universe returned to some sense of normal, she joined The Ultimates by Al Ewing and Kenneth Rocafort and, as of Ultimates2 by Ewing and Travel Foreman, she is now the team’s leader.
America launched in March with Rivera, and LGBTQ novelist, writing and Joe Quinones providing the art. The third issue of the fourth issue of the series will arrive in stores on June 21.
