The summer season offers all kinds of great blockbuster movie options, but with every new year, more and more of those options fall into one genre: comic book movies.
Whether its DC and Marvel superheroes, or movies based on more obscure comic book references – or simply properties that started out elsewhere, before eventually being adapted into comics – it’s all fun for fans who have long waited for these stories and characters to leap off the page, and come alive onscreen.

Here are The 7 Comic Book Movies to See This Summer!
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2
ย
May 5th
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2ย is definitely one of THE biggest geek movies of not just summer, but the entirety of 2017.ย As you can see below, anticipation is at an all-time high, and theย first reviews from fans and press are overwhelmingly positive.ย
Even James Gunn’s fellow Marvel directors are blown away by what he’s done with theย Guardians of the Galaxyย sequel, so ifย vol. 2ย is even better than the first, we are in for another classic Marvel movie experience.ย
Wonder Woman
June 2nd
The DC Extended Universe has had a hard time of things, thanks to the divisiveness ofย Man of Steelย andย Batman v Superman, and the general disdain forย Suicide Squad.ย
Wonder Womanย is supposed to be the turnaround point – the moment when the DCEUย stars on a more hopeful and heroic path. From what we’ve seen behind-the-scenes, it may just achieve that goal.
With the landscape of superhero movies seriously lacking major female characters,ย Wonder Woman is a welcome shattering fist for that glass ceiling.ย
Transformers: The Last Knight
June 23rd
A lot of people will look and see yet another Michael Bayย Transformersย movie, butย Transformers: The Last Knightย has a few things going for it that are worth distinguishing.
First,ย The Last Knightย has one of the better human casts of any film in the franchise, with returning favorites like Josh Duhamelย and Mark Wahlbergย being joined by new additions like Isabela Moner, Laura Haddock, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Secondly,ย The Last Knightย will mix historical fact with some new Cybertronianย mythosย – two elements that fans of the franchise really enjoy.ย
Finally, the darker tone and epic visuals are giving even haters a glimmer of hope thatย Transformers: The Last Knightย will be an improvement on Bay’s usual formula.ย
Spider-Man: Homecoming
June 7th
Spider-Man: Homecomingย will bring Sony’s Spider-Man property into the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and so far, the footage from trailers has looked pretty good.
Actor Tom Holland is a perfect fit in the role, and the Marvel influence is clearly working much better than what saw fromย Amazing Spider-Man 2ย at this point in its development.
Our Spider Senses are tingling in the best way…
Full Metal Alchemist
July 12th
This live-action adaptation of the popular anime will be hitting theaters overseas. However, with its massive fanbaseย in the West, we expectย FullMetalย Alchemistย will have some nice crossover appeal in the US and UK, and is worth the investment of time and travel for manga/animeย fans to seek out.ย
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
July 21st
Lucย Besson made cult-classic sci-fi movie, The Fifth Element, and now he’s back to make his passion project,ย Valerian, which is based on a famous French comic series, dating back to the ’70s.ย
What makes Valerianย exciting is the uniquenessย of Besson’sย imagination – a bold and elaborate vision that has required the combined efforts of visual FX houses ILM (Star Wars)ย andย Weta Workshop (The Hobbit) in order to bring the various alien species, worlds, and technology ofย Valerianย to life onscreen.ย
At the very least, we expect an eye-popping sci-fi visual feast.ย
The Dark Tower
August 4th
Stephen King’s epic literary saga (which started as novels, but also became a line of Marvel Comics), has been trying to make it up onto the big screen for many, many, years – but now its finally happening, thanks to Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and Girl With the Dragon Tattooย director Nikolajย Arcel.
It’s hard to place expectations on this film, but we’re hoping the long wait will have been worth it.ย
