Larson understands the importance of the role, as evidenced by various comments on the character’s significance. It will be the first female Marvel superhero to helm her own film (let’s not count Elektra, fair?) in the shared universe, giving the character a profile on par with that of Wonder Woman’s.

And through all of the remarks about the film’s status moving forward, Larson isn’t taking the role lightly.

“I feel a great responsibility,” Larson said while speaking with the Sunday Times. “I want to create this symbol of strength and humor for women that I really wish I had had growing up. It feels so valuable.”

The landscape for storytelling in film has changed, with more tropes being discarded and conventions being broke. She hopes for Captain Marvel to be the next step in that process.

“We need to break through that glass ceiling โ€” women go to the theatre to see a movie with a male lead, and men will go see a film with a female lead. We’re all equals here.”

Captain Marvel is scheduled to premiere March 8, 2019. โ€จ

But the character could also debut on screens in Avengers: Infinity War, hitting theaters May 4, 2018.
