Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, freshly wrapped on directors Anthony and Joe Russos pair of upcoming Avengers films, wants to stick around the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Asgardian Avenger.

"I've just, literally two days ago, finished Avengers 4 and that's my contract — my preexisting contract is done now, so it's kind of like, 'wow, that's it,'" Hemsworth told IGN.

Hemsworth, who admitted he got bored of playing Thor before reprising the role again in Ragnarok, said his last three outings as the golden-haired god reinvigorated his enthusiasm for the franchise.

"Two or three films ago I was like, 'okay, a couple more.' I was enjoying it but I was like... I felt a little restricted," Hemsworth explained.

"And after this last experience with Taika [Waititi, director of Ragnarok], and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we've reinvented the character a number of times — even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don't get that opportunity often in a franchise," Hemsworth said.

"So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think."

"If I had the opportunity to do it again, I think I'd love to," he said.

"I also think there's an appetite for it now, or there's a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we've kind of broken the mold a bit."

Ragnarok drastically reinvented both Thor the character and his eponymous franchise: a calculated move by Hemsworth and franchise newcomer Waititi, the pair wanting to inject more "fun" into the oft-Shakespearean series.

The revamp paid off handsomely, earning Thor his highest-grossing solo movie yet and Marvel Studios' its 17th consecutive #1 box office opening.

Ragnarok, for a time the highest-ever rated Marvel movie on Rotten Tomatoes, has since earned $849 million at the worldwide box office.

Hemsworth next appears in Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters May 4, before reprising the role again in 2019's currently untitled Avengers 4, Hemsworth's eighth outing as the god of thunder.
