In 2016, Ryan Gosling gave a magical performance in La La Land — singing and dancing his way to a Golden Globe nominator for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, but he almost gave another magical performance this past year…as Doctor Strange!
In 2014, when Marvel began searching for their Sorcerer Supreme, Benedict Cumberbatch was the only actor seriously considered by director Scott Derrickson; however, the Sherlock star couldn’t accept the role initially because he had already committed to playing Hamlet in London’s Barbican in autumn of 2015. Marvel eventually waited for Cumberbatch’s busy schedule to free up, but in that interim, they met with other actors for the role: Joaquin Phoenix (Signs), Jared Leto (Suicide Squad), and Ryan Gosling.

Even though the Doctor Strange has grossed $658 million at the worldwide box office, so far, some will wonder how the film would’ve turned out if one of the aforementioned runner-ups landed the role.
Now, thanks to professional conceptual artist Court Chu, we at least know what Gosling would’ve looked like as Doctor Strange. He’s updated his website with two pieces of concept art featuring Gosling in Strange’s mystical wardrobe. “I worked probably not even a day on some version of Doctor Strange years ago,” Chu wrote, “and back then they wanted Gosling.”
