James Mangold And Dafne Keen Discuss A Costume For X-23

One of the main draws to super hero movies for comic book fans is the costumes which the actors are often sporting, adapting the vibrant colors and impressive physique from comics to the big screen.

20th Century Fox, however, has elected to keep the classic looks of characters away from the live-action adaptations for the most part. For example, we never did get to see Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine throw on the blue and yellow canary outfit over his 17 year run.

With the introduction of Dafne Keen’s X-23 in Logan, the possibility for a Wolverine character to don a comic book-accurate suit remains in future films.

The eleven-year-old Keen tells ComicBook.com she thinks super hero costumes are “uncomfortable,” adding she would wear a more classic X-23 suit “if it’s comfortable.” Director James Mangold has a more in-depth take on the suits.

“For me the relationship between movies, these movies and costumes always have to be the way we deal with costumes in all movies, Mangold said. “Which is you can’t just because you want to see it. We’re not doing like a Rose Bowl parade. We’re doing a movie. So the costume has to make sense. Like for instance costumes make sense for characters that are trying to hide their identity. Costumes make sense when they offer some kind of, it’s not even a costume, when they offer some kind of armor or some kind of defense when costumes don’t make sense to me it’s when they just. I just want it to look special so I pretend. Meaning that you have to have a reason to put on this outfit. Or else you’re just doing it because you know. I always understood why batman wore his flock because he didn’t want anyone to know who he was. All that being said you can see I maybe a friend in many ways the X-Men universe but I’m not exactly the most friendly to trademark outfits with a saga on their chest.”

X-23 eventually takes on the title of “Wolverine” in Marvel Comics, rocking an iconic costume of her own. For Keen to put on such a get up, she might have a bit of growing up to do as Laura Kinney is considerably older in the comics than the Laura we met in Logan.

Costume or not, Keen’s portrayal of the character is something to admire. Teaming with Jackman in his final effort as the X-Men character, she never once shies away from bringing intense amounts of emotion and action to each scene she is offered.

Logan is now playing in theaters.
