How The Deadpool Short Relates To The Sequel And Logan

If you went to go see Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie and were completely unaware that a Deadpool 2 teaser (titled “No Good Deed”) was going to be shown before it, you probably thought it was the opening scene of Logan and were caught by surprise — 30-seconds into it — when the man donning a black hoodie and blue jeans revealed himself to be Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds).

The scene itself features Wilson coming upon a man being assaulted in an alley. Instead of running over to help him, he doesn’t want to risk exposing his identity, so he runs across the street to a phone booth in order to change into his Deadpool costume. By the time he gets his super-suit on and rushes back to the alley, the person that was being victimized is now dead, lying in a pool of his own blood.

Since the scene was directed by David Leitch, who is helming Deadpool 2, and written by Rhett Reese, who is co-writing Deadpool 2, is it an indicator of the sequel’s tone?

“It was a little more absurd, to be honest,” Reese told CS, while promoting his new movie Life. “If you look at the plot, abandoning an innocent man as he tries to get dressed, that’s probably something that doesn’t fit into a movie. It wouldn’t work in the logic of a movie, but Deadpool affords us the opportunity to break rules, always. We just thought, ‘Let’s make a silly short that doesn’t really happen to Deadpool.’ We don’t really like to adhere to any rules in Deadpool. Even the tone can be more absurd if we feel like it’s funny. That was our goal there.”

“We also wanted that open to feel like the start of Logan,” he added, “so if you were going to see Logan and the first shot came up you would think it’s gonna be Hugh in the hoodie, and then when it turns out to be Deadpool you realize what’s going on. That was the goal and I think he pulled it off wonderfully.”

The Deadpool sequel, which is being directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde) and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin filming at the end of this spring. The film will introduce Deadpool’s time-traveling mutant partner, Cable, as well as X-Force member Domino, who is being portrayed by Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz. Supporting charactersfrom the original film — such as Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapicic), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and taxi driver Dopinder (Karan Soni) — are also expected to return.

Deadpool 2 will arrive in theater in 2018.
