This weekend, Disneyland made a big step to cash in on Marvel’s superhero frenzy. The company, which bought the comic studios some time ago, finally opened its first permanent Marvel ride in the U.S. Disneyland’s California Adventure park retired its Tower of Terror to make way for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! The ride has been a hit so far as queues to get on the attraction have taken over the theme park. And, now, one person at Marvel may be hinting more rides are to come.

Over on Instagram, the vice president and executive editor of Marvel’s Digital Media Group just sent fans into a frenzy. Ryan Penagos, AKA Agent M, shared a short video on Instagram which hints at something next to the Guardians of the Galaxy ride.

“There’s something Mighty hidden next to Guardians of the Galaxy #MissionBreakout. What could it mean? #staytuned #itsallconnected #HeroUp. Tip courtesy of @wizardofcroz23, who keeps the #seeeekrits!” Penagos captioned the video.

In the video, fans can watch as the camera pans over the Guardians of the Galaxy ride before it settles on a piece of grass next to the attraction. It is there that a hi-tech logo for the Avengers has been planted into the ground, prompting fans to wonder if Disney is looking into a ride for the squad.

So far, there are no confirmed plans on Disney or Marvel’s end to pursue an Avengers ride, but fans would be happy if some were. After all, the two companies have continued to heighten the popularity of heroes like Iron Man over the years. If fans were able to travel to Disneyland and join the Avengers for a day, you can be assured that millions would jump on the chance.

However, there’s still the issue of legality to consider.

Even though Marvel was bought out by Disney several years back, the former company has a slew of its popular characters tied up in a contract with Universal. Back in 1994, Marvel entered into a contract with Universal Orlando which gives the latter resort exclusive theme park rights to characters from the Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four. And, yes – the contract is one that’s in perpetuity.

The contract states that Universal Orlando has exclusive Marvel theme park rights east of the Mississippi River, and the west coast is also held to certain stipulations. It is because of this contract that Disney World has held off on any Marvel rides, but Disneyland has more legal give thanks to its location. The smaller park is not bound to the contract’s geographic rule. Disneyland is able to use Marvel characters so long as the attractions don’t use the name ‘Marvel’ and are not part of a sub-park in the way Harry Potter World is.

With Disney World tied up in legal knots, Disneyland is the only U.S. venue where Disney can cash in on Marvel’s theme park opportunities. So, if the Avengers were to assemble for a high-tech attraction, the gang would have to do so on the west coast or branch out to one of Disney’s international parks.
