Doctor Strange had to represent the entire world when bargaining with the dread Dormammu in his film’s climax, and now he has to represent all superhero films for 2016. That’s because Strange is the only superhero movie that was nominated for any Bafta Awards, often called the “British Oscars,” in the 2017 nominees list.

That means Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad were all snubbed, not even receiving any technical nominations, a staple for big genre productions.

Doctor Strange was nominated in Production Design – John Bush and Charles Wood, Make-up and hair – Jeremy Woodhead, and Special Visual Effects. They’re up against movies like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but then also against films like La La Land, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Nocturnal Animals.

Fantastic Beasts led the way for big budget genre with five nominations including Best British Film, but genre’s big winner of the year is Arrival, with nine total nominations, the second most of all films (La La Land took first with 11).

Doctor Strange comes to Digital HD February 14, and Blu-ray and DVD on February 28. The Bafta awards are held February 12, 2017 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
