Ever since details first emerged about The Gifted ahead of its debut, fans have wondered how much the series would delve into X-Men lore and whether it had anything to do with the movies.

Though it exists in its own universe separate from the films, it’s apparent the show is heavily influenced by the comic books after just two episodes.
With the main characters being a family with the last name “Strucker,” there are some serious implications that the two teenagers could be a new take on Fenris, the twin mutant supervillains who are the children of Hydra leader Baron Von Strucker.
ComicBook.com caught up with The Gifted actors Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes White at New York Comic Con to find out whether or not their characters Lauren and Andy Strucker are indeed Fenris. Check out the clip above!
“Don’t say anything,” Lind advised White, warning him not to give up any information. White was indeed silent in response to the question.
Fenris “Confirmed”
Asked what comes to mind when they hear the word “Strucker,” Lind began by calling them “some very cool comic book characters who may or may not be in the TV show. We may or may not be them.”
She followed up by looking at the camera and mouthing “WE ARE,” while nodding. “But maybe not,” she added.
When asked if the word “Fenris” means anything, Lind immediately burst into laughter while White just made a noise as if he was caught saying something he shouldn’t have.
“I don’t know,” Lind said with a laugh. “Possibly? ‘Fenris?’ Is that a vegetable?”
White joked and said, “I’ve never heard of it.”
So, it’s pretty obvious the direction the show is heading in, even if the stars don’t want to admit it.

The von Strucker Twins
In the final moments of The Gifted‘s second episode, Roderick Campbell (Garret Dillahunt) was introduced to the audience as a scientist with a focus on mutants.
Fans of the comics know that character will eventually become Ahab, the sadistic cyborg who runs mutant prisons in Rachel Summers’ dystopian future of the “Days of Future Past” timeline.
In the show, Campbell looks up an old newspaper from May 21, 1962, with a headline reading “Mutant Terror in Rio De Janeiro,” referencing a pair of siblings as the culprits.
It’s not clear if the reference means the Strucker family has some skeletons in their closets or if the show will involve some time travel shenanigans. One seems more likely than the other at this point, but The Gifted could go into some interesting directions as we meet more mutants and explore their powers.
Andrea and Andreas von Strucker are known as Fenris in the X-Men comics, the children of Baron Wolfgang von Strucker and the leaders of a terrorist organization.
Though the show will likely take many deviations from the source material regarding their legacy, especially since Hydra belongs to Marvel Studios and Baron Strucker already appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it seems like The Gifted will be nodding heavily toward the source material.
We’ll find out as the season unfolds.
The Gifted airs Mondays on FOX.
