When Spider-Man swings into his first solo film based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s going to be a different look at the character than what we’ve seen in the two previous cinematic iterations. While Sami Raimi’s trilogy and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel all largely focus on Peter Parker post-high school, director Jon Watts and Marvel Studios have chosen to go a different route.

Portrayed by Tom Holland this time around, Peter Parker made his MCU debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. When Spider-Man: Homecoming rolls around, Parker will be just a sophomore in high school. And while the MCU timeline typically matches real-time, they’re bending the rules for everyone’s friendly neighborhood hero.

“There will be some awkward chronology in that the movie comes out almost two years after Civil War, but we’re playing it like it’s a few months after Civil War. It hasn’t been years since Tony called him back,” Homecoming co-producer Eric Carroll told SR, and other members of the media, at a recent set interview. “It came down to one of things we wanted to do was keep him in high school as long as possible. Let’s have him do something fun and different. Sony came to ourselves when we sat down and we thought, ‘Why do this version?’ And it is because we can really do a high school. Show that this is a young hero. Otherwise you have seen it all beforeโ€ฆ”

While Spidey did take on some the MCU’s biggest heroes in Civil War, he hasn’t necessarily had a true threat. That will all change when he face’s off against Adrian Toomes’ Vulture (Michael Keaton) in Homecoming โ€” a challenge that will prove to be a little more difficult than semester tests.

“This is a fun, different take. If we say that it was actually two years after Civil War then he’s moving on, he’s a senior, and when the next movie comes out, it’s his sophomore year of college, and we really wanted to do multiple movies where he’s in high school,” Carroll reflected.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming.Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine โ€“ distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man โ€“ but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The cast features Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Logan Marshall-Green, and Marisa Tomei.

The film is being directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), based on a screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (Vacation reboot) and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers.
