Spoilers for Civil War II #8, so if you haven’t read the issue you’ve been warned.

Picking up where issue #7 left off, issue #8 continues the all-out battle in the sky between Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Iron Man still has Spider-Man in a force bubble, keeping Captain Marvel and the rest of SHIELD from taking him into custody. As the two trade blows in the sky, Captain Marvel charges up to hit Iron Man again, and here Stark yells out “Friday!”, the name of his armor AI. Right after he’s hit so hard his armor shatters, sending him to the ground below.

Later on Beast and Captain Marvel are examining Stark in some sort of hibernation pod, and Beast reveals that he does have a heartbeat. The only problem is that Beast has no idea what Stark has done to himself, seemingly putting himself in some sort of weird coma, and he doesn’t want to continue prodding in fear of breaking something. They decide to let him come out of it naturally and close the pod.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis recently spoke to ComicBook.com about the storyline and the sheer unpredictability of the Marvel universe as a whole.

“With the ongoing myths of the Marvel Universe, which is obviously one of my favorite things, you don’t know what’s going to happen next year to the two of them. You could wake up and the fight starts all over again in Civil War III or he wakes up and their relationship changes. When and if Tony wakes up, what will his relationship be, not only to Carol but to the entire Marvel Universe?”
