When it comes to the international box office, it seems like Marvel Studios can do no wrong. Even since Iron Man launched into theaters back in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven itself to be a money-hungry monster. In the last few years, the MCU has proven it can churn out movies which go on to earn billions at the box office. And, thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the franchise can now say it has raked in over $11 billion worldwide.

Yes, billion with a ‘b’ – that’s some serious cash.
In its first international opening weekend, the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel managed to churn out $101.2 million ahead of its debut in the U.S. The much-anticipated film is expected to perform as well if not better in other markets as its distribution grows, meaning that the MCU is in for another jackpot.
Since 2008, the MCU has managed to earn $11,015,200,000 across all its features. The franchise’s top four box office winners have earned over a billion on their own. Marvel’s The Avengers earned over $1.5 billion at the box office while its sequel came in close with $1.4 billion. Iron Man 3 also earned $1.2 billion alongside Captain America: Civil War.
Right now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is expected to bring in a grossing similar to the first film. The original superhero film grossed $773 million, so its sequel still has quite a ways to go.
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
