The first trailer for Marvel’s The DefendersNetflix crossover event is out, and one of its many highlights was seeing the return of Elektra (Élodie Yung), whose presence in the story will seem to have major impact.
Based on what we know from Marvel Comics lore, the established storyline of the Netflix MCU series, and what we see in this trailer, we have some solid answers to a big question: What Is Elektra’s Role in The Defenders?

The Black Sky
When last we saw Elektra Natchios, she was dead. In Daredevil season 2, we met Elektra, and learned of how she was taken in by Stick and The Chaste, while Stick secretly knew she was actually a Black Sky, a living weapon of The Hand.
Elektra came back to New York to help Stick manipulate Matt Murdock into the war against The Hand, but ultimately sacrificed herself to save Matt, during a climatic battle with Nobu Yoshioka.
In the final teaser scene of the season, it was shown that The Hand plans to Bring Elektra back as Black Sky.
Zombie Elektra?
In The Defenders trailer, it’s clear that Elektra is now embracing her role as Black Sky, presumably working as an assassin/enforcer for The Hand.
In the scene above, The Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist) are presumably battling the forces of Sigourney Weaver’s ninja CEO villain, Alexandria, when Elektra shows up to lay some smackdown – starting with Matt Murdock/Daredevil, who tries to trade blows with his former lover and gets pushed through a glass pane for his effort.
If there was any confusion before, it’s now clear that Elektra will be a villain in The Defenders. The only questions are:
- Will she still be one by the end of the story?
- Is she in control of herself (like the resurrected Nobu), or is she an unwitting Zombie-Elektra?
- Is she just muscle, or does her status as The Black Sky play a much bigger role in the story?
A New Look
It should noted that Elektra is getting a new costume for The Defenders, which you can clearly see above.
The costume keeps with the theme of her original MCU outfit, but has more influence from The Hand. Not a major revelation – but as always, a cool feature of a new Marvel project.
Marvel’s The Defenders premieres on Netflix on Aug. 18, 2017.
