In recent years the X-Men and most of mutantkind have been preoccupied with their very survival, staving off extinction from either those who hate and fear them or from biological threats like the terrigen mists. Now that the dust has settled in their war against the Inhumans, things can become more about kickstarting a new generation of mutants to carry the torch, and that’s where Generation X comes in.

Marvel has provided fans the first look at Generation X #1, which will focus on the mutants who don’t necessarily have a place on the prime X-Men teams. The journey is not going to be without its bumps, but it should be enjoyable watching them figure out how to adapt to their powers and their place in mutantkind.

“Now in Central Park, the rechristened Xavier Institute has taken this move as an opportunity to re-evaluate their students, internally dividing the student body into three classes: The Next Generation of X-Men, the Next Generation of Ambassadors, and the Next Generation ofโ€ฆ well, lovable losers” says writer Christina Strain. “These are our Gen Xers. And they include mutants with benign powers, mutants who are considered liabilities during missions and/or battles, and mutants with personalities ill-fitting of an ambassador. They’re basically all mutants who just don’t seem to fit in anywhere โ€” including the very school where they were promised they would fit in.”

Generation X is written by Christina Strain with art by Amilcar Pinna and a cover by Terry Dodson. The book will launch with several variants from Rahzzah And June Brigman, Kevin Wada, John Tyler Christopher, Leonard Kirk, and Bryan Hitch. You can view the covers in the gallery as well as a first look preview of the upcoming issue. The official release can be found below.

A shining beacon and safe haven for young mutants everywhere, the next class of X-Men begin their long journey right here at the Xavier Institute. But let’s face it: not all mutants are created equal. Some young mutants aren’t cut out to be the next X-Men. For some, you just hope they will survive their first run-in with a Sentinel. But Jubilee isn’t about to sell her class of underdogs short. Under her instruction and mentorship, she hopes to navigate them through growing pains and dangers that would put even the most seasoned X-Men to the test!

What do you do when you’re the outcasts among the outcasts? When you don’t fit in โ€“ even at the school you were promised you’d belong? Forge your own path. Welcome to Generation X; hope you survive the experience! Be there for the exciting kickoff when GENERATION X #1 comes to comic shops and digital devices on May 17th!
