With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 available on DigitalHD, the eagle-eyed and well-trained Marvel Studios fans are able to pick apart the film for details in a frame by frame manner. Already, one fan has spotted a major Easter egg, potentially referencing the Marvel hero of Mar-Vell.

When Rocket and his squad were blowing up the Ravager ship, he sat in the cockpit chair scrolling through destinations with Baby Groot on his shoulder. One of the which Rocket scrolled passed was Hala, shown to the audience in a mirrored format when it zipped by on Rocket’s holographic glass screen.
First introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 in December of 1967, Mar-Vell is a member of the Kree race. The Kree have been introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, with Ronan attempting to enforce their will on the universe. One of Mar-Vell’s first encounters on Earth was with Carol Danvers, a character set to appear in her own Captain Marvel film in 2019, which will be set in the 1990’s, centering around the Kree-Skrull war.
Whether or not the Easter egg to Hala, Mar-Vell’s home planet, is a nod to the character’s debut coming in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is unknown at this point. Ironically enough, a rumor prior to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s release claimed Mar-Vell would be Star-Lord’s father, a role which turned out to belong to Ego the Living Planet.
Easter Eggs
Easter eggs are nothing new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel are loaded with references to the larger world of which they are a part, the early MCUย films were, in part, built on Easter eggs similar to the potential Mar-Vellย plug.
For example, in Iron Man 2, Captain America’s shield was introduced by Phil Coulson when Tony Stark used it to level a project her was working on in his garage. In the same scene, Coulsonย told Stark he was being reassigned to New Mexico where, in the same movie’s post-credits scene, he would discover Thor’s hammer.ย
Then, almost a decade later, Spider-Man: Homecoming comes along, jam-packed with references to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the Hulkbusterย armor, Cap’s prototype shield, Thor’s magic belt, and the Sinister Six. ย
Cameos
In addition to Easter eggs, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was loaded with cameos.ย
Not only did Howard the Duck and Stan Lee reprise their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but a number of other faces popped up in the cosmic adventure. Chief among those cameos was Sylvester Stallone’sย Starhawk, leader of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, and his co-hortsย Martinex, Mainframe, Charlie-27, Aletaย Ogord, and Krugaar.
Of course, what would Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have been if not for David Hasselhoff appearing, if only for a few moments, to fill out the list of cameos?
