When Marvel‘s Inhumans series was first announced, many assumed that Maximus would be the primary antagonist, based off of his history in the comics.

Maximus Boltagon is the brother of Inhumans leader Black Bolt, and is typically plotting either directly against the family or simply for his own benefit. He’s a very manipulative character, and showrunner Scott Buck explained to EW his vision for the character. “We didn’t want to create just a simple villain who’s evil for the sake of being evil. He’s a very real, three-dimensional character. Iwan is more than capable. Every time we watch dailies of him, we’re just more and more excited about what he’s bringing to the screen.”

While he will be a source of chaos for the Royal Family, don’t expect the more extravagant plots and schemes from the books. “I think our Maximus is a different, more complicated, more real, more compelling version of Maximus that has been seen in most of the comics, and it’s just because we have the opportunity to do so much more on the screen than you would in a comic book.”

Maximus has on occasion attempted to dethrone his brother, even going so far as to try and take Medusa as his Queen. His mind controlling powers have often aided him in his machinations, but he’s at his best when playing a Loki type role, someone who is simply always scheming for his own amusement. Hopefully, that aspect will be a focal point in the show. Maximus first appeared in in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four #47.

The reported synopsis for Marvel’s Inhumans is listed below.

“After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself.”

Marvel’s Inhumans stars Anson Mount (Black Bolt), Serinda Swan (Medusa), Ken Leung (Karnak), Isabelle Cornish (Crystal), Eme Ikwuakor (Gorgon), Iwan Rheon (Maximus), Sonya Balmores (Auran), Mike Moh (Triton), and Ellen Woglom).

Marvel’s Inhumans will premiere the first two episodes in IMAX on September 1. The full series will debut on ABC later this fall.
