While fans knew that Cable would be featured in Deadpool 2, almost every name you could think of was thrown out as the actor who would embody the character. Considering he was already playing Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, Josh Brolin seemingly came out of nowhere to snag the coveted role. The character’s creator, Rob Liefeld, spoke with ComicBook.com about what made Brolin the perfect choice for the role.

“It’s continuing the tradition, in the film, of really great actors,” Liefeld explained of Brolin’s talent. “If you only see No Country for Old Men and Sicario, you’ve seen two great, totally separate, Josh Brolin performances. You’ve got Llewelyn, who’s sullen but determined, and he doesn’t speak much, but you follow him the whole time in No Country. And then, Sicario, he’s this wild, shoot ’em up, C.I.A. guy. The guy is a tremendous actor.”
Another strength of the actor is not only his commitment to physically transforming himself, but how effectively he’s achieved a rugged superhero physique.
Speaking to the actor’s dedication, Liefeld explained, “The way we’ve watched his transformation–I mean, I immediately started following his trainer. Eventually, when I get the guts up, I’m gonna ask, ‘I’d like to have that training regimen please.’”
“He’s such a great actor, that’s where it starts. Who else, really, is gonna hold their ground with Ryan [Reynolds]?” the creator said of Brolin’s counterpart. “I mean, that is…energy unbridled. When I see the two of them together, I think it’s going to be the comic book equivalent of Rush Hour. I don’t know if comic fans are ready for it.”
