Ryan Reynolds, star of Deadpool, is eager to see an intercompany crossover that lets his deadly mercenary fight alongside – or possibly against – Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, and the rest of the Avengers.
“That sounds like a great idea but a very expensive idea,” Reynolds told Total Film. “Can you imagine the s**t-talking contest with Iron Man? Oh, that would be great. But it would have to be rated R to completely unharness everybody. Unbridle the merriment and watch them goโฆ”
20th Century Fox may have found success with R-rated superhero movies like Deadpool and Logan, but it seems unlikely that the family-friendly Marvel Studios and its parent company Disney would be interested in going R-rated with the popular Avengers franchise.
As far as expense goes, 20th Century Fox seemingly couldn’t afford more than one X-Man to appear in Deadpool, which is something that Deadpool joked about in the film itself, so it seems unlikely that they’d be able to afford to rent out the Avengers from Disney, even if that unlikely scenario were on the table.
The idea of Deadpool joining the Avengers has actually occurred in the Marvel Comics universe. Steve Rogers invited Deadpool to join the Avengers Unity Division sometime after the events of Secret Wars. However, the events of Secret Empire and Deadpool’s blind trust in Captain America seem to have ended his time with the team.
Deadpool 2 is set to debut in theaters on June 1, 2018.
