It's no secret: Sony Pictures has had a lot of Spider-Man tries over the years. After bringing in Tobey Maguire for the hero's first film franchise, the star wars edged out by Andrew Garfield for a new reboot after Spider-Man 3. Now, Tom Holland is the man behind the hero as the British star has brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This year, Sony and Marvel will team-up to debut the hero's first standalone film following his debut in Captain America: Civil War. And, now, Holland has revealed his take on Peter Parker differs from past iterations because of his ultimate Avengers goal.
Speaking with Yahoo Movies, Holland was asked during a live Facebook Q&A how he felt his Spider-Man standalone compares to previous takes on the hero. It was there the star said he seems a difference thanks to Peter's desire to become an Avenger and his mildly immature response to gaining super powers.
"I think the difference is now that Peter Parker finds he has an all-time goal. His goal is to become an Avenger," Holland said. "Everything he does, even though he's doing it for the right reasons, is done so that one day he can maybe become an Avenger and prove himself to Tony Stark. We've never really seen Spider-Man with that kind of motivation before."
Continuing, Holland went on to say Spider-Man's high school status allows audiences to see what a super-powered kid would look like. "It's also really nice to just see a kid with super powers, you know? We've seen the scientist, the billionaire, the god. Now, it's time to see what would happen if a kid was given those responsibilities - and it's fun. It makes it more funny because he doesn't really know what to do with them or how to use them - when to use them. It's just a very different grounded version of what I think superhero movies are."
So far, fans have gotten a good look at how Spider-Man's teenage habits mix with his vigilante alter ego; However, fans have not seen much of the kid's interactions with the Avengers outside of Civil War. Tony Stark is said to act as a mentor to Spider-Man in his upcoming film, but the pair do not seem to be looking eye-to-eye as of late. It doesn't seem likely that Peter will get an immediate invite to the Avengers by the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the hero will have other chances to enlist. The movie has already had a sequel green-lit, and reports have suggest Marvel plans to make at least three Spider-Man films with Sony. Peter will have plenty of time to prove his worth to Iron Man and the rest of Earth's mightiest heroes. Now, let's just hope the kid can do all that whilst turning in his homework on time.
