Spider-Man has been one of Marvel’s most popular characters since he made his debut back in August 1962. The teenage vigilante continues to wow fans with his web-slinging stories even today, so Tony Stark may want to keep a close eye on the hero. After all, Spider-Man may wind up become the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next Iron Man if the Avenger isn’t careful.

This weekend, Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected to hit theaters, and actor Tom Holland has been busy promoting the film as of late. Recently, the actor sat down with the Toronto Sun to talk about his MCU experience, and Holland revealed he hopes Spider-Man takes Iron Man’s place as MCU connective tissue in future films.

“That’s the dream. That’s the goal,” Holland says. “I think the amazing thing that [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige is doing is expanding that connective tissue to every character. Every character can pop up in any of the movies at any time. It’s like the world’s most expensive TV show.”

Iron Man has long acted as the MCU’s own web-weaver. Robert Downey Jr. kicked off the MCU with his explosive debut in Iron Man back in 2008. The actor then popped into The Incredible Hulk and even introduced the Black Widow to the MCU with Iron Man 2. When The Avengers came around in 2012, Iron Man acted as one of the squad’s go-to leaders in light of Loki’s chaotic schemes, and the hero most recently came to bat against Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War.

Now, thanks to Spider-Man, it seems like Iron Man can now add another line to his resume: mentor. The previews for Marvel’s Spider-Man movie shows Tony Stark interacting with Peter in the same way a fussy father does wile protecting their child. When Spider-Man chooses to rebel against Iron Man, it will fall on the Avenger to back Peter up against baddies like the Vulture.

If Spider-Man is groomed by Iron Man to be his successor, the MCU will be able to move forward with a new leader. It has been nearly a decade since Robert Downey Jr. first played Iron Man, and the actor recently admitted he intends to hang up his suit before anything can get embarrassing. Iron Man may educate Spider-Man in movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War about how to lead the MCU’s next wave of heroes. And, if all goes well, Tony Stark will hopefully be able to retire in style and leave the world in the hands of Queen’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

You can find the official synopsis for Homecoming below, which has a 4.13 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings.
