However, when Ultronย began conquering the galaxy with an army of Phalanx at his back, Warlock knew it was time to come out of retirement and defend the galaxy.

When the dust was clear and Ultronย was finally defeated, Warlock stuck around. When Star-Lord announcedย that he was forming a team to keep the galaxy safe from future Annihilation-level threats, Warlock signed on as a founding member of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy.

9. Mantis

In the Marvel Comics universe, Drax the Destroyer was born Arthur Douglas, a simple human on Earth. After Arthur and his family died in one of Thanos’ attacks, a cosmic being resurrected him as the Destroyer with all of the power necessary to complete his one mission: kill Thanos.

Draxย died and was resurrected and joined the Guardians of the Galaxy when Star-Lord formed the new team. It was his bond with the Guardians that gave Draxย a new sense of purpose in life.

5. Vance Astro

Gifted with powerful psionic abilities, Vance Astro is the leader of the Guardians of the year 3000. Astroย is an unusual member of the Guardians of the 31st century. Firstly, he’s a mutant, which made him unique among the Guardians of the Galaxy up until Kitty Prydeย joined Star-Lord’s modern team.

Secondly, unlike the other members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy team, Vance was born in the 20th century. He was frozen for a millennium and thawed out in the year 3000, and origin story similar to that of Captain America, a point underscored by the fact that Vance weildย Cap’s shield as Major Victory.

4. Groot

For years, Groot was an obscure creation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s from their days writing monster comics. The original Grootย was a would-be invader come to planet Earth.

Theย Annihilation event reintroduced Grootย as a benevolent alien who resembled an Earth tree and could only utter the words “I am Groot.”

Grootย is a kind-hearted exile from Planet X. He wandered the galaxy alone for many years until he met Rocket Raccoon and formed their special bond.

Grootย fought to defend theย galaxy from Ultron’sย Phalanx and later joined up with Star-Lord after he formed the Guardians of the Galaxy’s modern incarnation.

Where Groot is the gentle heart of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket Raccoon is fire and passion. Rocket is fond of oversized guns and he knows how to use them.

Like his buddy Groot, Rocket helped defend the galaxy from Ultron and joined up with Star-Lord when he formed the modern Guardians of the Galaxy.

2. Gamora

Gamora is widely known as the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, and she’s earned that title many times over.

Gamoraย is another former member of the Infinity Watch and was vital to the battle among those who battle Thanosย during the events of the Infinity Gauntlet. Following Ultron’sย attempt at conquest, she became a founding member of Star-Lord’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

1. Star-Lord

There really couldn’t have been another choice for the top spot on this list. In fact, without Peter Quill, this list probably wouldn’t even exist.

Star-Lord was an obscure, barely used cosmic Marvel character, but like many of the other Guardians, he came back to relevance when he helped stopped Ultron and the Phalanx.

However, it was Star-Lord’s vision for the Guardians of the Galaxy that brought the team to life. Quill recognized the need for a proactive team to prevent the next Ultronย conquest or Annihilation waveย and he made that team a reality. Star-Lord is the beating heart and soul of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
