Earlier today, Marvel Studios released a handful of new descriptions for characters appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Most the attention was given to the descriptions of Vision and the now officially named Ulysses Klaue.
However, there was another interesting character that mostly went under the radar. Claudia Kim is playing Dr. Helen Cho. Here’s the description again.

Dr. Helen Cho (Claudia Kim) is a world-renowned geneticist and an ally of The Avengers. From her offices in Seoul, South Korea, to sharing workspace with Bruce Banner in his lab at Avengers Tower, Dr. Cho’s research and technology help keep The Avengers in the fight.
On the surface, the description seems pretty inauspicious. It’s the character’s name that’s interesting. In the Marvel Comics universe, Helen Cho is the mother of the seventh smartest person in the world, Amadeus Cho.
For those who don’t know, Cho earned his title as seventh smartest man by winning a competition as a young boy. Bored with his life in Arizona, he took off and eventually met a kindred spirit in Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk. Cho tracked down the Hulk after he was shot into space by the Illuminati, and played a key role in the World War Hulk event. After that, he went on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D., became Hercules’ partner, and got wrapped up in the affairs of the gods leading up to Chaos War.
So could Amadeus end up being introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Age of Ultron? Hard to say. I don’t know of any 12-year-olds on the cast list for the movie, but it’s likely not something Marvel would advertise. If I had to guess, considering how crowded the movie already is, if Amadeus is in Age of Ultron I would it expect it to be a small role, perhaps be fleshed out later on. A seed of things to come.
And what could come of it? It’s interesting that the character description mentions Helen sharing a lab with Banner. It’s easy to imagine her introducing Banner to her young, brilliant son and planting the seeds of a relationship to come. On the other hand, it’s hard to see where that relationship would find time to blossom, given that there’s no Hulk movie on Marvel’s current film schedule. Perhaps Helen and Amadeus end up being forced to choose sides when the superhero Civil War breaks out, maybe giving Banner some added stakes in the matter.
Speaking in real world terms, studios are going far out of their way to impress the Asian market, which has been a major factor in the success of blockbusters at the international box office. Introducing Amadeus Cho as the Avenger’s super-genius junior member might be a good financial decision for Marvel, in addition to any specific narrative plans.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1.
