The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be one of Hollywood’s most lucrative franchises, but that does not mean its stars will stick around forever. Robert Downey Jr. will mark his tenth year playing Iron Man in 2018, and other actors have seen their superhero tenure age as well. The MCU has yet to kill off any of its major players, but that could all change by the time Avengers 4 is said and done. And, now, the star of Captain America has talked about how his hero’s storyline will wrap.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Chris Evans sat down to talk about his current work with Marvel Studios. During the chat, the actor reveals he chose to extend his Captain America contract for both Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel tie-in. And, when Evans was asked about Captain America’s “ultimate fate,” fans were right to feel nervous.

Evans could not say anything substantial about his role’s end-game, but the actor did say he agreed to do the two-film Avengers arc “because it made sense. It’s going to wrap everything up.”

Later, Evans went on to praise Marvel Studios for its ability to keep its stories and tones consistent. “I’ve been on sets where you get a vibe that everyone’s making a different movie,” he explained. “The director one, the actors another, the producers another one still. Marvel has a way of ensuring that on the day filming begins, everyone is making the same meal.”

For now, there is no way of telling what kind of ‘meal’ Captain America will be served on Evans’ last outing, but it will be a bittersweet one either way. Right now, most fans are simply concerned the actor’s iteration of Captain America will be killed off in one of the Avengers films. The character made it out of Captain America: Civil War intact despite the comic canon’s insistence otherwise. The death of the First Avenger may be what’s needed to spur a superhero team-up against Thanos. Plus, Sam Wilson or Bucky Barnes could take up Steve Rogers’ shield should the hero bite it.

Some fans won’t give up on Evans and his take on Captain America just yet. In the past, the star has said he really loves playing the hero, but Evans is not the one who has the final say about the gig.

“It’s really not up to me. My contract is up. I’m not going to sit here and say, “No more.” I think Hugh Jackman has made 47 Wolverine movies, and they somehow keep getting better,” Evans told Collider earlier this year. “It’s a character I love, and it’s a factory that really knows what they’re doing. The system is sound, over there. They make great movies. If they weren’t kicking out quality, I’d have a different opinion. But, everything Marvel does seems to be cinema gold.”

Avengers: Infinity War is described by Marvel Studios as the culmination of everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man in 2008. The movie is filming now under directors Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

The expansive confirmed cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bethany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin as the villain Thanos. Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel are filming back-to-back for a May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 release, respectively.
