Netflix has become increasingly known for creating spectacular original films and series. Every year, they release new films that open our minds and captivate our imaginations. While many of these films will be the start to a new franchise, others will always exist as a standalone, despite potential demand. For example, we all know that given the success of KPop Demon Hunters, a sequel is all but a certainty at this point. However, there are just as many films that had the potential to be more, and despite the fans begging for sequels, theyโve never happened. These films cross a broad spectrum of genres, from family-friendly animated films to dark thrillers and everything in between.

Most streaming platforms are working hard to build a solid reputation with their customers. While thereโs no denying the varying rates of success, Netflix has been one of the more consistent creators since the beginning. They once had a reputation for saving cancelled series, though ironically, theyโre not guilty for ending many beloved franchises. On that note, fans are still shocked and disappointed that Netflix hasnโt followed up with the potential for sequels when it comes to these three original movies.
3) The Mitchells vs. The Machines (2021)

The Mitchells vs. The Machines is an animated film full of heart, to say the least. Itโs a sci-fi comedy that stuffs one family into a car for a road trip like no other. It all begins with the familyโs daughter, Katie Mitchell, who is ready to head off to college. Rather than having her fly away to her new school, her parents jump at one last chance to bond, bringing their younger son and dog along for the ride.
Unfortunately, the family road trip does not go according to plan, as they find themselves humanityโs only hope. Against what, you might ask? A global uprising of robots, courtesy of a tech entrepreneur and his latest โAI assistantโ that quickly grows out of control. The Mitchells vs. The Machines stars the voices of Danny McBride, Abbi Jacobson, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric Andrรฉ, and Olivia Colman.
The Mitchells vs. The Machines was originally created by Sony Pictures with the intention of releasing it in theaters. However, because of the pandemic, Sony opted to sell the rights to Netflix, allowing for a streaming release. The Mitchells vs. The Machines was a hit, even winning several awards (Best Animated Feature from the 48th Annie Awards). Despite this, thereโs been no confirmation of a sequel or spin-off adventure.
2) They Cloned Tyrone (2023)

Admittedly, They Cloned Tyrone is only a couple of years old, but fans have been begging for a sequel since its release in 2023. The story begins with a drug dealer, Fontaine. Heโs out working one night when a competitor decides to take him out. Imagine everyoneโs surprise when Fontaine shows up the next day. Yeah, somethingโs going on here.
Naturally, Fontaine is confused by these claims of his death, which are backed up by witnesses. This begins an investigation into what happened to the shot and kidnapped man (supposedly Fontaine himself). What they find is a shadow government cloning conspiracy.
They Cloned Tyrone stars John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx. They Cloned Tyrone has positive critical reviews and an incredibly loyal fan base. The film does have a bit of a cliffhanger ending, so fans have been waiting for any news about a follow-up film. So itโs surprising that Netflix hasnโt made any official announcements regarding the franchise’s future.
1) Nimona (2023)

Nimona is an animated fantasy adventure based on ND Stevensonโs graphic novel of the same name. This chaotic film is full of heart, and fans quickly took to the adventure. The story is set in a fictional kingdom, in which the Institute for Elite Knights is responsible for keeping the people safe from all threats, be they dragon or monster.
Enter Ballister Boldheart. He was set to be the first commoner knight the Institution ever accepted, until something went horribly wrong. He teams up with an unlikely ally, Nimona, a shapeshifter who wants to help his truth come out (for her own reasons, naturally). In doing so, they become close friends and change the kingdom forever.
Nimona stars the voices of Chloรซ Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, and Frances Conroy. The story is heartfelt and imaginative, and while the adaptation didnโt one-for-one follow the graphic novel, that just leaves room for future movies. Nimona was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Criticsโ Choice, Annie Awards, and the Academy Awards. Despite all of this, Netflix has failed to announce any future plans for a sequel. We shouldnโt give up hope, as the original production for Nimona was full of trials and tribulations (delays, cancellations, handing off the rights, etc.). If Nimona can survive those hurdles, theoretically, a sequel can handle a couple of years of waiting. Still, fans are eagerly awaiting any news revolving around Nimona.
