Sigourney Weaver, who will be returning to Pandora alongside Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, revealed that the production for Avatar 2—and presumably 3, 4, and 5—will begin filming later this year.
Weaver revealed the details to the Hollywood Reporter at a screening in New York City for her new film The Assignment.
“We’re starting!” Weaver said. “We’re starting training, and we’re starting — hmm, I probably can’t say anything. We will be actually shooting it by the fall.”
There were rumors that shooting would begin this summer, according to Worthington, but knowing how Cameron is late for everything related to Avatar it seems like a safe bet that fall is more accurate.

Cameron recently confirmed that the film would not make its planned release date of 2018, which would have been highly ambitious of the filmmaker if they were to go through with those plans at the current pace.
While the first film is one of the highest grossing movies in box office history (just another on the list of Cameron’s many money-making accomplishments), the planned sequels have been plagued with delays as they increase in scope and scale.
Cameron recently stated his intention to produce four Avatar sequels concurrently, and that the main reason behind the delay was because he was finalizing the scripts for all four films.
Weaver said she’s not nervous about the fan reaction because of the film production’s tardiness, reiterating that they’ll be happy to revisit the Na’vi after all this time away.
“I’m telling you, these scripts are so amazing, I’m not worried about [disappointing fans] at all,” Weaver said. “Am I worried about how we’re going to bring them to life? Yes, because they’re so ambitious. They’re so worth it. They’re well worth waiting for. I’m not worried about that at all. We’re trying to get it done as quickly as possible.”
James Cameron? ‘Quickly as possible?’ Does not compute!
Avatar 2 does not yet have a release date, but we should be hopeful to see it in 2019, ten years after the original film came out.
