Every MCU Character in Avengers: Doomsday’s D23 Teaser

Avengers: Doomsday has sparked massive new hype. Reports have come out that a crowd at Disney’s Destination D23 event was shown both a hype reel teaser for the Marvel Cinematic Universe event film, as well as a behind-the-scenes featurette that teased the Russo Bros. and their massive cast of Marvel on set shooting the movie. However, the internet had to internet, and as soon as rumors of the Doomsday footage started to circulate, things quickly got muddled at Twitter, and other platforms started boosting things like a fake Avengers: Doomsday poster; false reports that a trailer or actual finished footage was shown; as well as fake plot details mixed in with real reports about Marvel Studios’ presentation.

We have identified at least one outlet that we trust, reporting that the sizzle reel footage and behind-the-scenes featurette are real. And according to Geraldo Amartey of The Direct, the details and quotes below about Avengers: Doomsday are the ones you can trust.

Every Character in Avengers: Doomsday‘s D23 Teaser & Their Quotes, Explained

The Avengers: Doomsday sizzle reel reportedly began with a video intro that splices footage from the first Doomsday cast reveal event (the stage full of actors’ chairs) and highlight reel moments from each cast member’s previous appearances in the MCU.

There were also quotes from various Avengers team members that, taken altogether, tease the character dynamics and stakes we may be getting in Avengers: Doomsday. By now, every Marvel fan knows that the Russos never do anything without a pointed reason for it.

Below you can find our breakdown of each character quote from the Avengers: Doomsday hype reel and what we think it could mean in the context of the film’s story.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth)

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER
Marvel Studios

The video supposedly starts with Thor’s Love and Thunder line, “We could pull together the greatest team ever.” It hints that Hemsworth’s god of thunder could fully be in his daddy era during Doomsday, fighting with an optimistic outlook that’s the total opposite of where he’s been in the last few films (thank god).

Captain America II (Anthony Mackie)

Thor’s quote is reportedly followed by Sam Wilson/Captain America’s Brave New World line, “If we can’t see the good in each other, we’ve already lost the fight.” It’s more somber than Thor’s line, for sure, but echoes the same sentiment of a new group of Avengers (not “New Avengers”) trying to come together.

Black Panther II (Letitia Wright)

Marvel Studios

Shuri/Black Panther II’s decisive Wakanda Forever line, “Now is our time to strike,” gets dropped, which is certainly a pivotal inclusion to this lineup. We have no idea at this point if Queen Shuri and Wakanda’s loyalty lies with the veteran Avengers, the US government and the New Avengers, Namor’s undersea empire of Talokan, or with her own nation, and that alone. Wakanda could be a make-or-break factor in how Doomsday plays out.

Ant-Man (Paul Rudd)

Marvel Studios

Shuri’s ominous words are followed by Scott Lang/Ant-Man’s humorous book tour promise from the end of Quantumania, “Will I be there when the Avengers need me? Absolutely.” However, this time around, Scott may find that promise hard to keep; he was clearly left shaken up and deeply scared after facing Kang and learning he may have broken the multiverse. That tab could finally need to be paid during Doomsday.

Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh)

Marvel Studios

Yelena Belova/Black Widow’s Thunderbolts* quote “We stick together from now on,” certainly seems to have a different meaning in the context of Avengers: Doomsday. In fact, we’re wondering if it couldn’t be one of the last lines we hear in the film, as the final survivors band together to invade Doom’s “Battleworld” and kick off the events of Avengers: Secret Wars.

Falcon II (Danny Ramirez)

Marvel Studios

Yelena’s quote flows into Joaquin Torres/Falcon II’s Brave New World declaration that when it comes to being a hero, “That pressure, that responsibility? I want that too.” Could Falcon be one of the main survivors of Avengers: Doomsday, alongside Yelena? Either he’ll have to step up in a big way, or he’ll possibly die learning just how crushing the “pressure” of being a hero truly is.

Red Guardian (David Harbour)

Marvel Studios

Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian keeps things awkwardly optimistic with his Thunderbolts* quote “This has the makings of a team that can bring light from the darkness.” However, given the source, it could be a naive declaration from a doomed man, or the fatherly boost given to a group of unlikely survivors, who never asked for it.

Loki (Tom Hiddleston)

Loki's finale
Marvel Studios / Disney+

Loki seems to offer a more sober and doubtful outlook, taken from his Disney+ series, “Razing things to the ground is easy. Trying to fix what’s broken is hard.” It could speak to the real central thematic conflict in Avengers: Doomsday: a very meta acknowledgement that the characters (and by extension the franchise) have grown separate and disjointed, to the point that everyone (onscreen and in the audience) is wondering if they can ever come together again to save things.

Enter The X-Men

20th century studios

That’s where things reportedly jumped to a whole new level: The sizzle reel went beyond the MCU to start incorporating the characters and quotes of the Fox X-Men Universe.

Professor X (Patrick Stewart)

20th Century Studios

Prof. Charles Xavier’s X2: X-Men United quote reportedly got played: “There are forces in this world, both mutant and human alike, who believe that a war is coming.” It speaks to Xavier once again being the advocate for peace between warring peoples, even from different universes. I could also mark Xavier as an early target of Doom’s wrath if the powerful psychic senses him or the multiversal incursions before anyone else.

Cyclops (James Marsden)

20th century Studios

Cyclops’ X-Men (2000) quote, “If anything happens, I’ll take care of them,” is an ominous choice to include as a follow-up to Patrick Stewart’s quote; it could be seen as more foreshadowing that Xavier is a potential early casualty, forcing the X-Men to step up without him. Then again, it would be a smart move to finally let Marsden play a version of Cyclops who is the true leader of the X-Men (and tap into an era of the character from the comics a lot of fans love).

Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal)

Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four First Steps
Marvel Studios

It’s equally interesting to hear that Cyclops’ quote is set against Reed Richards’ Fantastic Four: First Steps quote, “Today we are your defenders. We will protect you.” We still have to bridge the gap between the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene of the F4’s ship appearing in their dimension, which means explaining what becomes of Earth-828. If Reed doesn’t fulfill his promise, what it does to his character could be one of the most interesting arcs to follow throughout Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Especially if he comes face-to-face with a Reed Richards variant who did save his world (from the 2000s movie).

Shuri & Wakanda

MCU Black Panthers
Marvel Studios

The whole reel reportedly ended with Shuri’s Yibambe!” from Wakanda Forever. That’s a stirring ode to the late Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, who ushered the same war cry from the Wakandan soldiers facing Thanos’ hordes in Avengers: Infinity War. Perfection. As for Avengers: Doomsday? Shuri could similarly be leading her people (or all people) into a fight that has no hope of victory.

The Russos Get A Special Guest In Avengers: Doomsday BTS Featurette

“Avengers: Doomsday” Directors Anthony & Joe Russo / AGBO

The Russo Bros. reportedly had a recorded video message for D23 attendees, shot right on location at the current set where Avengers: Doomsday is shooting.

“Hi D23 members, this is Joe and Anthony Russo. Right now we are in London shooting Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday,” they reportedly stated. “This movie is, to say the least, a big one for us. It is bigger than anything we have ever done. We are bringing together so many of your favorite heroes to face one of the greatest threats to the MCU.”

The Russos were also reportedly joined by Paul Rudd, who helped to sell fans on the epic scale of Avengers: Doomsday, as only a fan-favorite franchise ambassador can: “We’re surrounded by jaw-dropping sets and some truly incredible talent, many of whom you just saw teased in that great video. Bringing this story to the big screen means the world to us, and we couldn’t do it without your support.”
