The Disney+ streaming service has had some big movie additions recently, with Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* and the billion-dollar hit Lilo & Stitch both making their debuts on the lineup. Next week, it’s Pixar’s turn for a big Disney+ premiere, and this one might be a big discovery for a lot of fans.

Elio, the latest adventure from Pixar Animation Studios, is about to make its streaming debut on Disney+. On Wednesday, Disney announced that the family sci-fi saga would arrive in just one week, on September 17th. This streaming premiere comes a couple of months after Elio‘s theatrical bow, and eight days after the film arrived on 4K UHD and Blu-ray.
Unlike Lilo & Stitch, Elio wasn’t a massive winner at the box office. It was quite the opposite. Elio made just over $150 million in theaters and stands as one of Pixar’s lowest grossing films of all time. But that performance wasn’t because the film was bad โ both critics and audiences who saw it seemed to love it. Elio has an 84% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% approval from audiences. Folks enjoyed the movie, it just seems many didn’t give it a chance on the big screen.
Fortunately, Elio will now have an opportunity to cast a much wider audience net with Disney+. Given the popularity of Pixar, and the fact that Elio is still such an unknown for many, it could wind up being a substantial streaming hit. We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold over the next month or so, but the positive reactions Elio has received do bode well for its success online.
What Is Elio About?
Elio is the first original Pixar Animated Studios movie to arrive in two years, following 2023’s sleeper hit Elemental. The movie tells the story of a young boy, the titular Elio, who is obsessed with space travel and alien life. When he unexpectedly gets pulled out into space and mistaken for a world leader, Elio embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.
