Two Hit Christmas Movies Are Storming the Netflix Charts (Even Though It’s Only September)

Midway through September, we’ve just entered into the real kickoff to Halloween season, as the next month-and-a-half will be largely dedicated to eerie chills and spooky thrills. However, despite the time of year, some titles from a much jollier holiday were added to Netflix, and currently find themselves rising through the streamer’s movie charts.

This past week, Netflix added both Daddy’s Home and Daddy’s Home 2 to its streaming lineup. The two collaborations between Mark Walhberg and Will Ferrell are usually known for their popularity in November and December, but they have now found themselves some of the most popular films on Netflix.

Monday’s edition of the Netflix Top 10 Movie list shows Daddy’s Home 2 as the number six film title on the entire service. The first Daddy’s Home is a bit lower on the list, coming in at ninth. For whatever reason, the sequel has become more popular on Netflix, which is especially surprising when you consider it’s the more overtly holiday film.

Is Daddy’s Home a Christmas Movie?

The original Daddy’s Home, released in 2015, doesn’t have much to do with Christmas at all. The 2017 sequel, Daddy’s Home 2, is completely themed around the holiday, taking the characters on a full-on Christmas adventure.

That said, the original Daddy’s Home still has a surprising connection to Christmas. Despite not technically being a holiday movie, Daddy’s Home released on Christmas Day โ€” December 25, 2015. So while it isn’t about Santa Claus or presents, a ton of movie fans spent the holidays seeing the film on the big screen.

The holiday window proved fruitful for Daddy’s Home, as it went on to make more than $242 million at the box office after its Christmas 2015 release. With that kind of holiday energy, Paramount doubled down on the jolly efforts two years later. Daddy’s Home 2 gave the franchise a Christmas makeover and an earlier holiday season release date, rolling out the sequel on November 10, 2017. There was clearly hope this would energize the holiday crowd as they geared up for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but the film didn’t make quite as big a splash as its predecessor. Daddy’s Home 2 earned $180 million at the global box office, which still managed to be a substantial win for Paramount.

All that to say, fans are still holding out hope that a third Daddy’s Home may happen at some point. Those involved in the films, including Wahlberg, have expressed interest in one more sequel, but nothing official has come from Paramount just yet.
