The final trailer for Wicked: For Good has fans on the edge of their seat for the anticipated sequel, which will not only reveal the conclusion of Glinda and Elphaba’s rollercoaster story but will also weave the original Wizard of Oz and its iconic cast of characters into the mix. There’s a lot to process in the final trailer, but for those who are familiar with the original play, there are actually two truly crushing moments revealed in the midst of all the new footage. Spoilers are incoming for the original play from here on out, so if you want to go in without spoilers, you’ve been warned.

One of the key new additions to Wicked’s world in the sequel is the iconic quartet of characters from the original Wizard of Oz. As we’ve seen in various trailers, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man are going to be an important part of the film as it bridges both stories. The final trailer reveals our first look at the creation of two members of that group, who are the Tin Man and the Scarecrow.
Tragic Story of the Tin Man

There’s a scene in the trailer featuring the Tin Man speaking to someone off-camera. In the scene, the Tin Man looks particularly upset and confused, confirmed when he says, “What have you done to me?” A scene right earlier shows Elphaba wielding magic in a similar location, and if you know the original story, then you know the person he’s speaking to is Elphaba.
In the musical, Elphaba visits her sister Nessarose, who is now the governor of Munchkinland. The meeting reveals that she’s pretty much using her power to keep the Munchkin people down, and in turn keep Boq (played by Ethan Slater in the film) from leaving. Elphaba tries to soften Nessarose’s heart, but that ends up not going the way she intended, and Boq decides to leave her.
In desperation, Nessarose casts a love spell on Boq to bring him back to her, but her lesser grasp on magic causes that spell to have a tragic effect, as it actually ends up shrinking Boq’s heart. Elphaba then attempts to save Boq, but her spell also doesn’t go as planned, and instead of restoring him to someone with a full-sized heart, he is turned into a Tin Man who doesn’t require a heart. That’s why that scene from the trailer hits so hard, and you can feel the emotion when he asks Elphaba, “What have you done to me?”.
If there was any doubt that Boq is the Tin Man, that was erased when Slater posted an image of himself in the Tin Man costume on Instagram. Slater showed off the awesome costume with the caption “Wicked: For Good”, and director Jon Chu then chimed in with the perfect reaction of “Heartless”.
In a previous interview with VFX Voice (H/T Yahoo!), Wicked: For Good makeup artist Frances Hannon revealed how the scene will play out in the movie compared to the musical. Hannon said, โFor Tin Man, we wanted to achieve something sympathetic because it should have never happened to Boq. In our story, Elphabaโs spell goes wrong in Nessaroseโs office, and everything metal in that room attaches to Boq; his breast plate would be the tray on the table, and his hands become the thimbles, salt and peppers. Then, the visual effects took over because all the joints were blue.โ
Heartbreak and the Scarecrow

As we mentioned before, the second crushing moment we see in the trailer involves the Scarecrow, and once again, his creation is an unintended and tragic consequence of unpredictable magic. The first film establishes a genuine connection between Elphaba and Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey), but Fiyero actually ends up in a political arrangement relationship with Glinda to maintain the Wizard’s facade that Elphaba is evil.
This is a constant issue for Fiyero, as his feelings are unquestionably still for Elphaba, and he ultimately ends up rebelling against the Wizard when Elphaba is captured. Fiyero is able to help her escape, but is then captured and taken to the fields to be interrogated about where she’s gone.
To help free him, Elphaba attempts a spell that will protect him from pain and death, which is covered in the song No Good Deed. While she does successfully use the spell, it doesn’t go the way she planned, and instead of just keeping him safe, it takes a more literal interpretation and turns him into a scarecrow.
This is why he ends up being left in the field by the guards, but as we see in the trailer, Elphaba does find him after the transformation. She can be seen putting her hand on the side of his face, and while we don’t see Fiyero from the front, you can see part of his transformation already (shown in the image above).
It’s known how he will run into Dorothy after this, but we do get insight into his transformation and the creation of it from Hannon once more. “With Scarecrow, Jon and Mark particularly wanted to keep Jonathan Baileyโs face shape. We also kept his nice teeth and natural eye color for Scarecrow,” Hannon told VFX Voice. “I used contact lenses on Jonathan for Fiyero, so we had a nice change there. Then, for his head element, I put masses of gold blonde through his look as Fiyero, which carried onto Scarecrow in a straw-colored wig; that kept Fiyero attractive because Elphaba and he fall in love.โ
This is the final trailer, so while a few more images will likely be released, the long wait for November now officially begins.
Wicked: For Good will land in theaters on November 21st.
