Agent Carter Being Developed as a TV Series

Agent Carter Short FilmLet the spinoff parade continue!

Within a week after it was announced that AMC is developing a spinoff from Breaking Bad and a "companion series" for The Walking Dead, Deadline reports tonight that Marvel is developing Agent Carter as a series for ABC. This would, presumably, deal in part with the roots of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel's premiere super-spy organization.

Given that Item 47, the short film that spun out of Marvel's The Avengers, ultimately led to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, it seems now as though the Marvel One Shot movies are being used not to tease characters for the movies, as has been widely expected, but as a broader development ground for all kinds of future Marvel projects.

Deadline's Nellie Adreeva says, in part, "the project is in very early stages, one of several in the works at Marvel, and is in the process of locking in a writer. It is unclear if [Hayley] Atwell would reprise her role if Agent Carter comes to fruition."

Atwell, of course, is the actress who portrayed Carter in the One Shot, as well as in Captain America: The First Avenger. Her character has a brief appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but she, unlike Captain America, wasn't frozen in suspended animation for the better part of sixty years and is not as young and spry as we last saw her.

That there could be a number of projects in the works tracks with what we know about Marvel's development pace at this time; while there are something like four "open" slots for non-sequels right now, studio executives have said that there are something like seven new properties in various stages of development.

The Agent Carter One Shot will be officially released next week, attached to the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray.
