Assassin's Creed Syndicate will take steps to diversify the franchise by introducing its first transgender character.

According to Eurogamer, trans male Ned Wynert will play a supporting role in the game, providing protagonists Jacob and Evie Fry with missions.

Ubisoft has also updated Assassin's Creed's opening statement. Every game in the series so far has opened with a message stating the game was "designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs." As of Syndicate, the statement now reads as follows:

"Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities."

Syndicate will also be the first game in the series to allow players to choose between a male and female character – Jacob and Evie - for most missions. The decision comes after Ubisoft faced criticism for cutting a female character option from the multiplayer mode in Assassin's Creed Unity.

"Inclusiveness is something that's super important for us as a team," Assassin's Creed Syndicate creative director Marc-Alexis Côté told Eurogamer. "We've made a good push towards diversity and how we approach different subjects in the game."

Assassin's Creed Syndicate releases Oct. 23.
