The American subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment has registered eight domain names related to Attack on Titan, specifically in movie form.

The domain names are:

  • attackonthetitan-movie.com
  • attackonthetitan-movie.net
  • attackonthetitan.com
  • attackonthetitan.net
  • attackonthetitanmovie.com
  • attackonthetitanmovie.net
  • attackonthetitanthemovie.com
  • attackonthetitanthemovie.net

All of these domains currently redirect to the Sony Pictures website. The Japanese studio already has a two-part film adaptation of Hajime Isayama's popular manga turned anime in development. The American domain names could mean a few things.

The first and most boring theory is simply that Sony is scooping up domain names so that they own them if they ever decide they want to use them. This also prevents squatters or anyone else from using the domains. It's not an uncommon practice for large media companies to do this, as a way of keeping a tight grip on their intellectual properties.

Another possibility is that they're planning on bringing the Japanese Attack on Titan movie into the United States. If this is the case, the question becomes whether it will be a small run, typical of foreign film releases, or if Sony has enough confidence in the film and the franchise that they believe it can compete with Western blockbusters. Or, it may even receive a direct-to-home media release, or a release on video on demand services.

Lastly, there's the possibility of an American Attack on Titan movie. That's a risky path to go down, as similar attempts by American studios to adapt Japanese anime have been less than successful – Dragonball Evolution, for example - or been caught up in development hell. Still, Dreamworks has recently pushed forward its Ghost in the Shell adaptation, with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, so its still a possibility.

The first Attack on Titan movie opens in Japan on June 27.
