Axe Cop

is one of those properties that's so ridiculously off-the-wall that it seems like it would be difficult to get wrong. Those who love the comic are likely to love the TV adaptation, provided it keeps a fraction of the same madcap energy, and that seems like such a gimme that it's frankly kind of amazing the level of effort Fox has put into getting the animated series right--but the cast list, officially announced today, shows that they're making the investment and taking the material-- --well, let's not say "seriously," shall we? That would ruin it. Nick Offerman, who has voiced the character in a number of animated shorts but who was under exclusive contract with NBC, apparently until yesterday according to The Axe Cop Blog, who say he was willing to go forward with the show uncredited if they hadn't been able to make a deal with NBC.

Which, arguably, would have been the most wonderful resolution imaginable since it would have seen the credits say that Axe Cop was played by "himself." Offerman has a recurring segment on Conan, which airs on TBS and is operated by Warner Bros. TV and Team Coco, but since his segment features "Nick Offerman from Parks & Recretion" in the title, apparently that's good enough to have kept NBC happy all this time. Axe Cop's partner Flute Cop will be played by Veronica Mars star Ken Marino, one of only a handful of recurring or regular characters from that series who hasn't yet been confirmed to return for the feature film they started shooting on Monday. Ratatouille's Patton Oswalt will take on the role of Sockarang, with Rob Huebel playing Gray Diamond. Peter Serafinowicz, best known for his roles in Edgar Wright's Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy and for giving voice to Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, will apparently play Dr. Doo Doo and also take on a number of lesser voices for the show. He'll be joined by Sin City's Michael Madsen as well as both Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito from Breaking Bad. This will only add to Esposito's geek cred after he has appeared in both Community and Revolution in the last two years. Lastly, co-creator Ethan Nicolle said, "Vincent Kartheiser is Bat Warthog Man. He plays the sad super hero who lost all his friends, and the episode is downright awesome." That needed to be included.
