Variety is reporting that Simon Cowell will develop a new film based on the classic animated character Betty Boop.
The project, a collaboration between Fleiscer Studios, Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic (animators of The LEGO Movie), will be a musical comedy. The musical aspect would seem to put it right in the wheelhouse of Cowell, who produced the singing competition TV series American Idol and The X Factor.

Betty Boop is a character who dates back to the early 20th Century. First appearing in 1930, she was the first breakout female animated star, embracing the style of the roaring 1920s as the era waned.
“Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world – I’m thrilled to be working with her,” Cowell said. “Betty, I’ve worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”
“I am delighted to partner with Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic,” said Mark Fleischer, chairman and CEO of Fleischer Studios. “Their energy, creativity and playfulness make them a perfect fit for Betty Boop.”
