John Romero, the co-creator of popular games like DOOM, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D, has published his first new DOOM level in over 20 years. In a post on Twitter and Facebook, Romero released a link to download his version of "E1M8", one of the popular levels in the original first person shooter game. Although Romero designed many of the maps in DOOM, E1M8 was originally designed by Sandy Petersen and Tom Hall.

DOOM was one of the first FPS (first person shooters) games released on PC and is hailed as helping to popularize that genre of game. Although DOOM was played by an estimated 15-20 million users after its release, the game created controversy due to its graphic (at the time) violence and demonic imagery. While DOOM was originally released in 1993, the game has an enduring fan base that continues to create countless new levels and gameplay modifications using the original game engine.

Doom 4, the first new DOOM game in over a decade, will be released for PC, XBox One and Playstation 4 later this year.
