Next year, Game of Thrones fans will see the series' penultimate season premiere on HBO. Season 7 will take place after this year's explosive finale that left plenty dead. To make up for those deaths, the folks behind Game of Thrones were busy recruiting new actors for Season 7, and they've even brought back a few familiar faces as well. And, now, we've learned that one of the returning characters is someone fans have been waiting to see for quite some time.

So, spoilers below!

Fansite Watchers on the Wall has shared raw footage from the set of Game of Thrones which confirms the return of a beloved character. After several seasons at sea, Gendry will return to the series and wield his father's Warhammer with deadly precision.

If you watch the video, you will see Gendry is joined on set by Davos and Tyrion. The footage shows Gendry and Davos prepping the former's boat to sail off somewhere when they are interrupted by two Gold Cloaks. Davos tries to show the guards that the boat is empty and even bribes them to go on their way, but they refuses to halt their investigation once Tyrion appears. When Davos tries to hold the Gold Cloaks off, the video shows the two reaching for their swords, but they are ultimately stopped from unsheathing their weapons. Gendry intervenes by apparently killing the men with his Warhammer, a move that gives him and his companions time to get their boat off shore.

Of course, fans will be excited to see Gendry return after a very prolonged absence. The character was last seen in Season 3 where he escaped Melisandre's evil clutches thanks to Davos. The elder foiled her plans to sacrifice the boy to bolster Stannis and his political power. Davos sent Gendry out to the Narrow Sea on a rowboat, urging the Baratheon bastard to flee Dragonstone and reach Flea Bottom.

Earlier this summer, several showrunners from Game of Thrones commented on Gendry's disappearance. Dan Weiss and David Benioff joked about the character's seaworthy adventures on the UFC Unfiltered podcast as Weiss said Gendry is "still rowing." Benioff chimed in as well, saying, "Yes, he's still rowing."

Weiss continued, joking that Gendry was "coming up on Florida" while Benioff said the character was "getting in great shape" after rowing for four whole seasons.

Gendry won't be the only character who returns to Game of Thrones for Season 7. Lyanna Mormount will return as the Lady of Bear Island after fans fell for the no-nonsense character. The 10-year-old girl was praised for her tenacious spirit, and she even aided Jon Snow in his appointment to become King In The North. Photos of Lyanna from the set of Game of Thrones were shared on Twitter earlier this month, so fans are excited to see her ally with Jon Snow throughout Season 7.

Other set photos from next season have dropped, and several recent pictures hint at a major confrontation between two characters. A local newspaper in Spain has reported that Jon Snow and Dany Targaryen will come face-to-face next season as photos were snapped of their armies walking with one another towards a place which fans believe to be Dragonstone.

Game of Thrones Season 7 is currently filming in multiple locations. Game of Thrones Season 7 will premiere on HBO in 2017.
