The best-selling soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy, the top-grossing film of 2014, has been nominated for a Grammy Award.

The soundtrack is nominated in the category of Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, where it faces competition from the soundtrack albums for Frozen and Get On Up: The James Brown Story, as well as The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 was the first soundtrack ever to take the #1 spot on the Billboard sales charts without having any original songs recorded for the album. It's not clear whether that will help or hinder its chances of winning the award. On the one hand, you'd think not having anything "new" to offer might hurt the album's chances. On the other hand, the soundtrack has been a huge hit, was key to helping craft the identity of the film in a way few soundtracks are, and there is an original song category in which the new content can win separately from the soundtrack award itself.

The Grammy Awards will take place on February 8, 2015. You can see the full list of nominees (except for Album of the Year, which will be named on a TV special titled A Very Grammy Christmas) here.
