Is Captain Marvel Going to Be In Guardians Of The Galaxy 2?

On the last day of February, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn held an impromptu question and answer session on Twitter. During it, he was asked if there is a favorite superhero he wants to bring to the big screen? He replied, "And will do so in GotG2!" In the articles that followed, many writers and commenters speculated on who Gunn's favorite superhero might be. Many of those suggestions were male superheroes, but it seems they should have been suggesting female superheroes instead.

The next day, Gunn tweeted this: "Two dozen articles this morning on who my favorite superhero might be and all of them seem to assume it's a male. What's up with that?"

Let's assume Gunn's favorite superhero is female, who could it be? I'm thinking Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel and here is why. When a Captain Marvel movie was announced by Kevin Feige in October, he added this bit of information: "Her adventures are very earthbound, but her powers are based in the cosmic realm." If her powers come from the cosmic realm it would seem quite fitting that she would make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to gain those powers as the first film established Marvel's cosmic universe.

Captain Marvel was rumored to make a cameo in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, but supposedly Marvel got "cold feet" about it, according to Devin Faraci of Badass Digest. Marvel could have easily moved her cameo to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 instead. It wouldn't be the first time they shuffled an appearance around.

Also, Captain Marvel's solo film doesn't come out until 2018 and it would seem to make more sense to have her appear in the 2017 Guardians of the Galaxy sequel than the 2015 Avengers sequel. Doesn't seem like a good idea to introduce her in a 2015 film and then make people wait three years to see her in action again.

Now, let's look at it from a comic book perspective, which is ever more enticing. In 2014, comic's megastar Brian Michael Bendis had Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers become a member of the team in his Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing comic, along with Agent Venom. In her own title, written by Eisner Award-winning writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, Captain Marvel had many cosmic adventures.Perhaps the most important connection is that Captain Marvel's backstory is linked with the Kree, which is the same alien race as Ronan (Lee Pace), who was the main villain in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Carol Danvers got her superpowers from an explosion of a Kree Psyche-Magneton device. When it went off it changed Carol's genetic structure so much so that she became the perfect hybrid of Kree and human.

Marvel's "Captain Marvel" will arrive in theaters July 6, 2018. Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 will arrive in theaters May 5, 2017.
