While rumors hit the web early this month that the Incredible Hulk will play an escalating role in the Avengers films and that a Planet Hulk movie might be in the offing, Joss Whedon claimed at a screening of Much Ado About Nothing last night that he hasn't heard of plans for a Hulk solo film at all. "Yes [it's possible to make a good Hulk solo film]," said Whedon, according to Geek Chocolate. "But it would be very, very hard. Hulk is a tricky son of a bitch. He's the Claudio of superheroes. Because the problem is it's a very popular character, but it's not a superhero. Half of it's a superhero, half of it's a werewolf. And you can't structure it like a superhero movie, you can't light it like a superhero movie. How do you develop that? It would be extremely difficult. The one thing you would have in your favor would be Mark Ruffalo. But right now I don't know if they have plans to do that or not, because he works so well as part of a greater whole, but by himself, it's tough. I don't envy the guys who went before." It's worth noting that the concerns Whedon raises are the same ones that were acknowledged by the originators of the Planet Hulk rumors, ostensibly to justify that story as opposed to another go-'round on Earth for the Jade Giant. Of course, Marvel is currently undertaking Guardians of the Galaxy, a movie that presumably won't be structured or shot like a standard superhero movie since it's much more space-based than anything we've seen from a comic adaptation up until now. Whether that might embolden or chasten the studio toward something like Hulk will probably depend on the box office take.
