As with the classic version of Monopoly, players will travel around the board, purchasing Pokemon (instead of properties) while trying to push their opponents into bankruptcy. Trainer and Professor Elm cards replace the Community Chest and Chance Cards, although other elements of Monopoly like the Jail and Go spaces remain unchanged.

Technically, Pokemon Monopoly - Johto Region is a remake of a 2001 Monopoly board game also based off of Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver. USAopoly also released a remake of their original Pokemon Monopoly game (set in the Kanto region) in 2014.

The Johto region has been in the spotlight several times in recent months, spurring speculation that the region might be used in the upcoming Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon games. Nintendo is currently hosting an online "Johto Classic" battle competition and Pokemon DVD sets featuring Ash Ketchum's adventures in the Johto region were released in 2015 and earlier this year. Some fans believe that Nintendo may announce Virtual Console versions of Pokemon Gold and Silver sometime later this year....although that's purely speculation.

Monopoly: Pokemon - Johto Edition will cost $44.99 and will be released sometime in the latter half of 2016.
