Frank Marshall, the longtime producer of the Jason Bourne films, has denied rumors that Matt Damon will return as Jason Bourne in the next installment of the franchise, expected in theaters on July 15, 2016.

Rumors recently cropped up that Universal had delayed the film's production in order to accommodate Damon's return to action, but Marshall told The Hollywood Reporter there's no truth to the reports.

"It's simply not true," Marshall tells THR, confirming that the film will star Jeremy Renner, returning to the franchise as Aaron Cross, the character he played in The Bourne Legacy. "[Director] Justin Lin is working with Andrew Baldwin on an Aaron Cross script/story that they pitched us a few months ago. I talk to Justin all the time and the script is not ready. It's a summer movie, and if we don't start preproduction now, we can't make next summer. Therefore, it's a wise decision to move to 2016."

The film will now open the week after both Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America 3, assuming none of the three films moves (again, in the case of both Bourne and Batman V Superman).
