20th Century Fox announced today that Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender will return for a sequel to this year’s Ridley Scott blockbuster Prometheus, tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in late 2014 or early 2015.A prequel to Scott’s sci-fi classic Alien, Prometheus left plenty of lingering questions and featured an ending that begged for someone to pick up the ball and run with it. Fassbender, who played a cybernetic life form in the movie, was a no-brainer for any potential sequel, but that they’ve got Rapace coming back to assume a Sigourney Weaver-esque role as the connecting thread between the films is an interesting wrinkle.Director Ridley Scott will also return, meaning that he’ll likely be working on a Prometheus sequel and a Blade Runner sequel either at the same time or end to end.The big behind-the-scenes loss will be writer Damon Lindelof, who recently announced that he would be taking a break from feature films and returning to television. The writer had previously teased the possibility of a Prometheus sequel, at the time saying that it was unlikely he would join. The film, which ranks a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes‘, earned mostly positive reviews but the negative ones largely revolved around plot holes in Lindelof’s script.”Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can’t rush it,” Fox president of production Emma Watts told The Hollywood Reporter. The story also includes updates on a number of other big franchise sequels, with studio heads indicating an interest in following up on films like Men in Black 3 and Ted.
