A new logo, a new lead character--and "the fist issue in a bold, new direction." That's tomorrow's Savage Dragon #193, featuring the first new issue of the new year and the first totally Malcolm-centric issue of the series since Dragon allowed himself to be powered down and placed in a conventional prison last issue. Of course, this all begs the question of what writer/artist Erik Larsen plans to do with Savage Dragon #200...but that's a whole other issue. "Dragon is Aunt May at this point or possibly Bruce Wayne in Batman Beyond," Larsen told ComicBook.com back in November. "He's there if we need him but Aunt May isn't going to steal the show. It's not ever going to be Aunt May's book. But for the short while–it's Malcolm's book and it's his turn to shine. I'm not going to be doing a lot of Dragon in jail brawling with bad guys issues. I've done a few of those and that's enough." "Dick Grayson was Batman for what seemed like five minutes," Larsen had said on Facebook around that same time. "The only successful handoffs were to Hal Jordan and Barry Allen and they could get away with that because the audience at that point turned over every few years and both Green Lantern and the Flash had been off the stands for a decade or so. The more recent handoffs with Kyle Rayner and Wally West were met with the constant drone of 'when are Hal Jordan and Barry Allen coming back?' As much as fans demand change–they sure aren't receptive to it when it appears." Earlier in that same thread, after a fan had told him that he wouldn't read Savage Dragon as long as Malcolm was the lead character, Larsen was exasperated. "I feel like Sam I Am sometimes," he wrote. "Can you at least TRY the godd—ed Green Eggs and Ham before deciding you don't like it? Sheesh!" Featuring a variant cover inked by Larsen's Image Comics partner and co-founder Todd McFarlaneSavage Dragon #193 is the ultimate jumping-on point for new readers interested to read what has been one of the best books of the last five years, hands-down. If you don't believe me, ask The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, who named the book his favorite of all time when he was asked for a recommendation at New York Comic Con last fall.
