Sherlock Holmes did what he had to do in order to protect John and Mary in the season three finale, but it required an action that will have long-lasting ramifications for the character.

Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch recently spoke to ComicBook.com's Jim Viscardi at San Diego Comic-Con about what fans can expect from the show's fourth season, especially after the explosive season three finale.

"I mean he did a very dark, but, he was beaten. You know somebody who resorts to that, to violence, to lethal violence is, is beaten in my opinion, so he met a match that he couldn't, he couldn't better, and I think it puts him in a very very difficult position and how he gets out of that, you know, we'll have to wait and see. Does he? Maybe it all goes back in time to an era before then, who knows."

Cumberbatch also bemoaned having to be so vague about the details, but he can't wait for fans to see what is in store for the duo of Sherlock and Watson.

"It's difficult this one because obviously, you have to manage expectations like I was saying in the panel just now. At the same time, I want to share the joys of what this has got coming for fans. It's so irritating because you can only talk in broad bracket terms. It's very dark. It's the same strain of trademark humor, the relationships are strong and deep and really complexified by what goes on."

Sherlock returns to the BBC in January of 2017.
